Orphans and Vulnerable Children Programme
This programme seeks to mitigate the impact of HIV and AIDS of orphans and vulnerable children and youth (OVCY), reducing their risk and vulnerability, and increasing their resilience and likelihood to become healthy, educated, and
socially well-adjusted adults. It focuses on OVCY Comprehensively, OVCY Preventive and OVC/DREAMS
cross cutting issues.
OVC Comprehensive: AFSA facilitates family-based and resource-intensive case management focused on 0 to 17-year-olds and their families with known HIV-related risk characteristics. Over 18 177 beneficiaries were supported
through this intervention.
OVC Preventive: This centres on primary prevention of risk to sexual violence and HIV among 9 to 14-year-old girls and boys. The key focus is to contribute to reducing the high rate of sexual violence against adolescent girls and boys.
AFSA aims to provide Vhutshilo-1, an evidence based sexual violence and HIV prevention intervention in high HIV-burden areas. The aim is also to link at-risk and vulnerable AGYW between AFSA and the AGYW social asset-building
DREAMS partners in the sub-district.
OVC/DREAMS Cross-cutting: This programme focuses on ensuring stability at a household level by prioritising family strengthening and HIV prevention for adolescents and their caregivers through the ‘Let’s Talk’ curriculum, a behavioural prevention and support programme to address key issues facing adolescents affected by HIV and AIDS. It includes the elevated risk of poor psychological health, risky sexual behaviour, and HIV infection. Parallel support for their caregivers addresses their personal challenges and provides them with emotional coping and parenting skills.
