Dare to Care donates R10 000 to feed 2400 orphaned and vulnerable children at Masoyi Home Based Care, Mpumalanga

Masoyi Home Based Care received R10 000 (approximately US$1 300) from MpowerFM and Pretorius Group of Companies under MpowerFM’s Acts of Kindness and Dare to Care initiatives.

Dare to Care is an initiative to challenge big business to get involved in and give back to those in need in the community. In 2010, Dare to Care focused on making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate in Mpumalanga province of South Africa. Mpumalanga has the second highest HIV prevalence in South Africa after KwaZulu-Natal, with 35.5% of antenatal clinic attendees testing positive to the virus. Mpumalanga is the only province in South Africa which has recorded increasing HIV prevalence since 2006 (Department of Health, National Antenatal Survey 2009).

Masoyi Home Based Care is one of AFSA’s partner organisations operating in Mpumalanga. This community-based organisation operates in the peri-urban area of Masoyi. It provides comprehensive HBC and services to 114 households in the community.
Masoyi further seeks to address the plight of over 2400 children in the area who have been orphaned or made vulnerable due to the convergence of HIV and AIDS, extreme poverty, high unemployment, inadequate housing and poor infrastructure. The organisation operates two Early Childhood Development centres and provides support to teenage mothers.  They also facilitate community education initiatives, support groups and income generating activities.  In 2009, Masoyi received R575 196 from AFSA to support their OVC programme. This funding came from Elton John AIDS Foundation’s OVC programme which AFSA is implementing with great success with several partner CBOs.

Louisa Van Wyk, of Masoyi HBC, says the greatest challenge the organisation faces is feeding the 2400 orphaned and vulnerable children, many of whom have no parents or guardian and survive in child-headed households. Director Florence Mbokazi says that every cent of this R10 000 donation from MpowerFM and Pretorius Group of Companies will be used improve the lives of the children in the community.
