AFSA Attending Second South African TB Conference 1-4 June 2010 in Durban, KZN

Representatives from AFSA will be attending the second South African TB Conference, held 1-4 June 2010 at the ICC in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. AFSA’s delegation includes a Project Officer who was successfully selected for a scholarship to attend the conference.

The theme of the conference will be ‘Forging Strategic Partnerships to Fight TB and HIV’. This conference is crucial for South Africa, a country facing one of the world’s worst TB and HIV epidemics: in its latest Global TB Report 2009, the World Health Organization estimated that South Africa has the fifth highest number of TB cases and the second highest TB incidence of any country in the world.

The TB Conference will be a forum for people of diverse backgrounds, experiences and skills to come together to review the evidence and to debate and develop innovative approaches to fight the TB epidemic in the era of HIV. The theme of the conference will be “Forging Strategic Partnerships to Fight TB and HIV”
This will highlight two central strategies. The first is the involvement of communities in prevention, case finding and case holding activities. The second is the provision of integrated TB and HIV services. In most of southern Africa, more than half of TB patients are living with HIV. To avoid missed opportunities and improve the quality of care, TB and HIV services should be integrated in health facilities and communities.” Prof. Harry Hausler, TB Care Association and Conference Chairperson.
