• To equip CBOs & NGOs with the necessary resources and support to implement programmes for the effective prevention of HIV and the mitigation of the impact of AIDS;

• To develop the skills base within target CBOs & NGOs to enable them to plan, implement, monitor and evaluate their work effectively;

• To build the organisational capacity of partner organisations for good governance and long-term sustainability.
  

These objectives are achieved by:

• Providing grants, over a number of years, to selected CBOs & NGOs for programme implementation;

• Building the organisational strength of the target CBOs & NGOs through quarterly monitoring, site visits, and a structured mentoring and capacity building programme.
  

AFSA’s approach to capacity building for CBOs has often been described as “coaching”, as it allows for a closer, more appropriate level of support to CBOs. AFSA has developed a comprehensive set of tools and operating procedures that cover all aspects of its work with CBOs & NGOs.
