The overall aim of the Foundation is to limit new infections
of HIV and to mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS that primarily affects
communities and households in vulnerable and under-resourced regions.
In response to the rapid spread of the HIV/AIDS
epidemic in these regions, large numbers of Community Based Organisations
(CBOs) have been established. Although these organisations are
generally small, they have a very important role in the communities
they serve. They labour, however, under two major constraints:
- The lack of available resources to carry out their work in an
effective and sustainable manner;
- Their limited organisational capacity to manage and implement
their projects effectively.
The Foundation has sought to address these two problems by:
- The provision of grants, ranging from R120 000 to R250 000 per
annum, over a 3- year period to selected CBOs to equip them with
the necessary resources and skills to implement effective programmes.
- Building the organisational capacity of the target CBOs for
good governance and long-term sustainability. This is achieved
by means of quarterly site visits, intensive mentoring, skills
building, learning & sharing, and leadership-training programme;
- The facilitating of greater networking and collaboration between
local stakeholders & role players.
